Bringing the roof down

Barden Development has contracted with the UK's leading and longest-established manufacturer and supplier of roof trusses: Donaldson Timber Engineering, based at Buckhaven across in Fife. Donaldson is the best firm for this type of work.

During the next week, the prefabricated trusses will be brought down to the site. Here we have a quick look inside the factory at their production.

The timber comes from a sustainable Scandinavian source, graded TR26 European whitewood. The jig on the floor allows for millimetre precision.

The upstand at the far end will be forming the parapet running around the roof. Individual trusses weigh about 120kg.

The trusses are bundled together in groups for easier handling, each group of 10 weighing about 1.2 tonnes.
